Q) With your comedy background, is there room to improv much on the show?ДЄ) They will give you one вЂњfor freeвЂќ where it is just going nuts. When youвЂ™re performing for Cubs fans five nights a week in Chicago you find out pretty quickly what swings and doesnвЂ™t swing with the vast majority of the population.

Also, I moved to Chicago in 1995 to study at Second City and I was fully immersed for about eight out f o the ten years I was there in improvisation and sketch comedy. My father was funny and my older brother Tom is very, very funny. Is it something that has always come naturally to you or have you had to work on it?ДЄ) I think it is a little bit of both. ThatвЂ™s when there are three people who they feel might that one of the guys will end up being the lead so they brought us in to read with Betsy and right off the bat we hit it off in a way where I thought, вЂњWow! This is really comfortable.вЂќ Betsy and I hit it off at the chemistry read. Were you familiar with any of your costars before working with them?ДЄ) I knew who they were, but IвЂ™d never met any of them. Q) There is such great cast chemistry on the show. Tim kind of became that kind of guy as well as a result of that. I told them that I really love heavy metal and IвЂ™ve always been a fan of heavy metal and glam rock. They take some of our personal stories and wrap them in. Q) Was there anything you have added to him that wasnвЂ™t originally in the character breakdown for you?ДЄ) What happens in a process like this, they have been really great at sitting just down and asking what weвЂ™re into, where we come from and what we like to do. As an actor, they call you to see if youвЂ™d be interested in reading this and I said, вЂњYes, of course!вЂќ At first, it was just that Betsy Brandt was going to be playing the wife. They didnвЂ™t know what kind of doctor he was going to be so that was all secondary. At the time, what it really specified was the doctor part of it. IвЂ™m just kind of the goofy dad that wants to have fun and be with the family.

Q) How was Tim originally described to you?ДЄ) The way it was pitched to me was that he was this average, modern day TV dad. IвЂ™m as excited about that just as much as anything right now. We have Steve Jones from The Sex Pistols and Carson and myself and my friend Miles Strong.

It is a great story about a seedy little motel in the desert in California and I play a series of characters on the show. He is a brilliant writer and a really funny guy. IвЂ™m currently working on a really exciting animated series for TBS called вЂњTarantulaвЂќ that is written, created and stars Carson Mell.

IвЂ™ve been out publicizing a film I shot last year called Brave New Jersey that stars Anna Camp and Tony Hale as well. IвЂ™ve also been fortunate to do a couple episodes of вЂњVeepвЂќ this year. Q) What are the recent projects that you are working on?ДЄ) IвЂ™ve been pretty busy with вЂњLife in Pieces.вЂќ It takes up the vast majority of my time.
